The government signed a memorandum of understanding with state authorities in Bavaria, southwestern Germany, to provide homegrown technologies for the region's mobile television services expected to go live in 2006.
Policymakers here hope the deal will help promote Korean info-tech and broadcast technologies to become an industry standard in Europe.
The market for mobile data services is expanding rapidly there and Korea wants to secure a larger export market for the domestic industry.
In an agreement reached yesterday between Korea's Ministry of Information and Communication and the Bavarian State Agency for New Media, the ministry will participate in the mobile television pilot operations in the cities of Regensburg and Munich starting this year and through 2007.
They will provide core technologies based on terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting or T-DMB.
German authorities agreed to promote Korean technologies to be adopted for mobile television pilot projects in other European countries and help develop them accordingly with local market environment and demand.
The Bavarian State Agency for New Media is one of 15 state media agencies in Germany and is responsible for the supervision of private broadcast services in Bavaria.
The agency expects to launch a mobile television pilot project in Regensburg in September and in Munich next year before the start of the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany.
"This means that journalists and fans will be able to watch the FIFA World Cup matches with Korean mobile television broadcast equipment and receiver devices, which will play a vital part in spreading homegrown technologies in Europe," said an official from the Communication Ministry's information and communication technology cooperation bureau.
Mobile television services, dubbed by Korean officials as digital multimedia broadcasting, are designed to beam digital television, audio and data to handheld devices via satellite or land-based television airwaves. Korean mobile-phone operators and television broadcasters expect to launch commercial services within the second quarter.
Mobile carriers and television broadcasters in Europe are pushing for the commercial adoption of mobile television services, which they believe will be a key revenue source in the future.
Most companies believe the World Cup in Germany, starting in June next year, will be an ideal period to expose the new technologies.
According to the state-run Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, exports of mobile television-enabled handsets by Korean electronics makers will reach $14 billion by 2010.
