I just bought a Dell Precision 620 Workstation with dual Xeon 933MHz CPUs with 512MB of RAM. Win XP Pro is loaded and the machine works fine. MS Office and occasional photo editing are the main apps. This machine will support 4GB of RAM. My question is, does anyone know firsthand if upgrading the ram to, say 1GB, make a noticeable difference? RDRAM is expensive, so I don't want to experiment.
Thank you!
If you are using it just for Office and light photo editing, 512M is fine. With dual Xeon CPUs though, adding more RAM will let you use that workstation for much, much more. It all really depends on what your needs are. _________________ White Papers
So why buy a race car if ur not going to race?
why just use that race car to go to church and back home?
Does not make any good sense to me.
that puter is made to run with lots more RAM, that its expensive is not the issue.
Also of what use is dual cpus if ur running ms office? u most likely cant type over 10,000 words per minute!! heck none of us can.
ya, ya, the price was right..ya right!!
if ur just running office, more ram is of not much use.
occasional photo editing? the magic word is occasional, so i wud say..again NO
but (as the teach says) the more RAM the batta!!
like one can never have enough good looks, too much money..etc one cant never have too much ram
xp does like to use 1024mb. and u will notice some difference.
my question is this, what programs are u using that utilize dual cpus? i wud think, none!! but ( as the teach says) i cud be wrong.
u just dont use a dual cpu puter and run the normal programs and they use the dual cpus
u need programs made to run using dual cpus. just like 32 bit programs arent made to run on 64 bit puters, they can run but not at their max.
That sounds like a nice machine and you say it works fine. So what is it that you do that you think will improve a lot with more RAM? If you're doing really big photo editing jobs, you might occasionally save a couple of seconds, but I don't think it's worth it. If you're really hot to add RAM, wait a year or two for the price to come down.
I'm all for more RAM. Computers can be a great source of entertainment, as well as taking care of business.
Especially doing photo's, Paint Shop Pro, as fun as it is, took away alot (around 20%) of my RAM, probably 'cause I don't know what I'm doing (as many here know).
If you want to explore and use your computer to its fullest, and if you have to do it with fear of using too much memory, its not fun.
The variety of software out on the market never ends, as well as some wild downloads, ever here of ANIMUSIC? Its different.
Computer games are becoming a ritual of the past, but there are still some interesting ones out there. (EA, for example, is on this big piracy rampage, and many of their PC games won't play if a CD burner program is detected). Most companies are primarily into producing games for consoles and other platforms, where the game probably couldn't be reproduced. The few good games that are out are addicting. They use mucho RAM, whatever the minimum available RAM requirements are for the game (especially the recent games) make sure you have double the available minimum RAM before you play. When they say minimum...they really mean minimum.
A friend of mine was having a big family reunion, all the game intsructions, party favors, and decorations, and decoration instructions we got off various sites was a blast. We made buttons and stickers and banners and T shirts. all kinds of junk.
Not only that, I guess you can download movies as well as well as recently released CDs.
Its endless.
Once you get started, you'll have a blast.
Toshiba (my computer company) advertises that having more RAM than you need does take the strain off of the something or other. They are into selling there own customized RAM for these 17inch destop replacements. Even though this is sales pitch, there is truth to it.
I've been there and done that at near capacity, it gets scary. The computer chugs along with pauses and hesitations, you can feel it being overworked. _________________ Free MusicCpopServer Definition
